Subject:Reflections on Lisbon
Time:10:15 pm.
Mood: contemplative.
First: Why it was lost.

There were a multitude of reasons, the complex nature of the document itself, the ease with which opposition groups could scaremonger and the general unhappiness on local issues meaning a strong protest vote turnout; however, I genuinely believe that it could have been carried if the work had been done on the ground by the main parties. Areas where I know the local cumann/whatever were active and going door to door to listen to and alieveate the publics concerns voted Yes, even in areas that wouldn't traditionally be bastions of EU support, like rural areas. The ball was dropped, again and they all have egg on their faces. FF had difficulties due to the Ahern/Tribunal issues and the change of leadership, this doesn't excuse it but it does give some explanation for the lack of coordination. FG reportedly were giving trouble at local level because they saw it as an opportunity to wound an already bleeding beast in the FF party, this again doesn't excuse it but it does explain why they weren't out on the ground. Labour well, I don't know but it could be similar to the FG situation. The PDs no longer have the pull to be relevant and the Greens were hamstrung by their (silly) 66% requirement. This could have been won if it had been fought right but for various reasons the stomach or inclination to do this just wasn't there.

Second: What to do.

They can't just run the same Treaty again and work it hard on the ground, it would be too damaging politically. Some of the reforms could/should be passed through the Dáil using the Nice treaty. The Commissioner system is a possibility, and so is the increased funding for the EU's foreign representative (the President role wouldn't be though). They need to come back with something slightly different and tailored to the Irish to get it passed, the problem is, what needs to be changed? For Nice, neutrality was the obsticle and here again it seemed an issue but not the issue. A guarantee on the protection of the Irish tax veto might be an option but again I'm not sure if it would be enough. The Government and the EU really need to figure out why this went the way it did and how to fix it and this is something that needs to have full cross party support. It doesn't suit any of the main parties to be fighting with the EU, this needs fixing.

Arguably I'm dismissing the No vote as something that just needs placating here, and I know this might seem cynical or arrogant in the extreme but I sincerely doubt that the vote on Thursday was a vote for leaving the EU. The ball needs to be picked up, not just because it could be good for Europe but because it would seem that it's what the Irish want too. They key reason put forward for voting no in the MBRI poll was not understanding/knowing about the treaty. This is something that could have been fixed with a well orchestrated cross-party campaign. The political climate over the Tribunal issues precluded this happening but that doesn't mean we should throw and otherwise good EU reform treaty away.

Subject:D&D 4th Edition - tentative first impressions
Time:4:29 pm.
Mood: tired.
I won't really make my mind up about it until I've played a campaign of it but so far I like the changes that have been made. It's very much focused on dungeon crawling, but this doesn't bother me, I like dungeon crawls. The system has moved towards the MMO idea of roles and party mechanics based around the basic combination of support, tank, control and dps. What I like about this is that, apart from control, there is a variety of classes to fill each niche and sub-specialisations within each class to suit personal tastes and playstyles. DPS goes from melee rogues and rangers to ranged warlocks and rangers etc. Some classes seem to be more useful than others, in DPS warlocks and rogues both have thievery but rangers don't, why take the DPS class that can't disarm traps in a party?

I haven't finished reading it, I've mostly focused on the DPS classes so far. A short campaign of it will definitely be needed before I form anything like a solid opinion on it I think.

Subject:Very long meme
Time:8:10 pm.
Mood: bored.
The movie fans behind the website They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? have assembled what they claim to be the most definitive "greatest films ever" list by gathering no fewer than 1,604 critics' lists and 656 other miscellaneous polls from hundreds of print sources from the last several decades, and used a complicated formula to tabulate the results shown below: The 1,000 Greatest Films of All Time.

Your task:
Bold the titles you have seen.
Italicize the ones you have only partly seen.
Underline the ones you currently own.

Yes, a very long meme. I didn't bother with the last two rulesCollapse )
